Why am I passionate about this?

I have been practicing psychotherapy since 1999. I started reading self-help books when I was 19 years old in college because I wanted to know more about myself, why I felt the way I did at times, why I felt stuck at times and how I could feel empowered to make changes. Sadly many books don’t tell you what you can do to change and that is why I wrote my book. The books I am sharing with you have had big effects on my thinking and therefore my behavior. For it is in how we think, we act in our lives and with others. These books help you look at you.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of The Art of Impossible: A Peak Performance Primer

Madhur-Nain Webster Why did I love this book?

I am recommending this book, The Art of Impossible, because it creates a deep thinking of “what do I stand for? Where am I going? And How do I get there?” It has science, spirituality, and self-awareness in one place.

I loved this book so much I went to the store and bought every copy and gave it out to friends and family. When I would read it I felt empowered to think deeply and look at my life with new insight. I was reading this book during the start of covid. It helped me stay focused. Stay engaged in my life path and learn tools on how to stay focused.

Book cover of The New Rules of Marriage: What You Need to Know to Make Love Work

Madhur-Nain Webster Why did I love this book?

I picked up this book about 12 years ago. Being a psychotherapist I love, love learning. I love attending workshops (pre-covid) and learning new ways of thinking. New ways of looking at issues. New ways to look at how we get stuck in our relationships and life. Reading this book gave me tools that have transformed my therapy practice and how I work with couples. How I interact with my husband, my sons, and my close friends. It helped me by giving me insight into who I want to be in a relationship and it gave me self-worth as well. I have all the couples I work with read this book and it speeds along our therapy work.

Book cover of Getting the Love You Want: A Guide for Couples

Madhur-Nain Webster Why did I love this book?

I read this book for the first time when I was 22 years old when I was in Russia at a yoga retreat. I had gotten out of dysfunctional relations (back then I would not have used that word as I wasn’t a therapist yet…it was a shitty relationship that sounds more like my 22-year-old self). I picked up this book to help me find what I wanted in relationships. Funny I meet my husband (of now 25 years) a few months after I read this book. This book talks about why we pick the partners we do and how to be more aware of our patterns and “unfinished” business in our thinking and hearts. I read this book again when I was in my early 30’s and had been married with two boys. I had been a therapist for a handful of years and read it again to learn about “imago” through the therapist's lens. A great book to read post a breakup, in a relationship, or wanting a relationship.

Book cover of The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure

Madhur-Nain Webster Why did I love this book?

This book is so different from the other books on my list. I just finished reading this book recently. I found it completely fascinating. It talks about how our newer generation has changed how we listen, talk and feel. I find that this is happening in relationships as well. This book is a weave of communication, how we take things way too personally and how this affects how we interact with others in life and how we relate to our feelings. I think this book can help how we listen, share and have internal boundaries. While reading this book I didn’t realize how much I needed it. I wish all teachers, administration of all schools, and parents would read this book.

Book cover of The Mood Cure: The 4-Step Program to Take Charge of Your Emotions--Today

Madhur-Nain Webster Why did I love this book?

I read this book about 12 years ago. My son was having a hard time. I had tried therapy for him, for me. It wasn’t enough. In no way was I going to put him on medication as I had seen what this had done to some of my young adult clients. They were struggling and also self-medicating with recreational drugs. I wanted something more, something natural. A friend recommended this book and the author Julia Ross happened to live only 45 min away. I read this book and it was a game-changer for me and my family. The amino therapy was so helpful and created such an internal change for my son that life was more manageable. Now 10 years later I am training in this work and have seen amazing changes in some of my clients for anxiety, depression, energy, sugar cravings, and more.
